It was now early August and we hadn’t been paddling for a couple of weeks so we were anxious to
take on something new. We departed from Ft. Wetherell State Park, just south of Jamestown, and headed east across the bay to the southern end of Newport. Shortly after passing the Brenton Point
lighthouse, we noticed a sea of intimidating breakers and decided not to test our skills and instead headed back north to Newport Harbor. When we arrived in Newport Harbor we saw numerous power
boats anchored and discovered that the annual Newport Folk Festival was taking place. We continued
north pasing through the crowded harbor getting a good view of the Coast Guard’s tall ship, the Barque
Eagle. From there we paddled across the bay, past Rose Island, through Jamestown Harbor, and back to Ft. Wetherell.
